How do I request a Certificate of Origin for my Ford?
It is possible to obtain a copy of a Certificate of Origin through your selling Concesionario Ford or state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
As a manufacturer of new motor vehicles, Ford is required to issue a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin when a vehicle is produced. This document enables a U.S. dealer to transfer ownership of a new vehicle to a customer for titling and registration purposes. At the time of sale, dealers will include the Certificate of Origin in the packet sent to the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to register a vehicle.
Note: A Certificate of Origin would not be necessary if the vehicle has already been registered and titled.
Replacing a Certificate of Origin
A Certificate of Origin is produced only once at the time of manufacture. If you are looking for a Certificate of Origin, visit your original selling dealer or your state's DMV because they might have an available copy.
If they are unable to provide you with a copy, you can contact your dealer to request a Compliance Letter. While this is a different document, it may fulfill your state's DMV or foreign country requirements concerning a vehicle's origin.
Note: Compliance Letters are only available for model years newer than 1967 and cannot be issued to certify a vehicle's eligibility under the preferences and benefits of any Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
