Preguntas Frecuentes
What is the issue tied to this recall?
Certain 2020-2023 Ford Escape and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles with 2.5L HEV/PHEV have engines that could fail prematurely. In the event of an engine failure, significant quantities of engine oil and/or fuel vapor may be released into the under hood environment resulting in potential underhood fire, localized melting of components, or smoke.
What is the cause of the issue?
Isolated engine manufacturing issues have resulted in engine failures involving engine block or oil pan breach on certain 2020-2023 Ford Escape and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles with 2.5L HEV/PHEV engines. In the event of an engine block or oil pan breach, the HEV/PHEV system continues to propel the vehicle allowing the customer to continue to drive the vehicle. As the customer continues to drive after a block breach, oil and/or fuel vapor continues to be expelled and accumulates near ignition sources primarily expected to be the exhaust system.
What is the repair?
For 2020—2022 Ford Escape® and 2022—2023 Maverick® vehicles, local dealers are ready to repair these vehicles now. The repair will update the software in your vehicle’s Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
For 2023 Ford Escape® vehicles, dealers will replace the engine long block.
What should customers do?
Owners of affected vehicles should contact their local dealer to book an appointment for the recall repair.
Should customers still go in to get their vehicle repaired for 22S47?
Customers are still encouraged to contact dealers to complete any open safety recalls on their vehicles.
Are there any symptoms that the customer might notice that could indicate their vehicle has an issue?
Engine failure is expected to produce loud noises (example: metal-to-metal clanking) audible to the vehicle's occupants. An engine failure will also result in a reduction in engine torque. Customers should safely park and shut off the engine as promptly as possible upon hearing unexpected engine noises, after experiencing an unexpected torque reduction or seeing smoke from the engine compartment.
Can customers still drive their vehicle?
Ford has not issued instructions to stop driving vehicles under this recall. If customer hears loud (metal-to-metal clanking) engine noises, experiences an unexpected torque reduction or sees smoke from the engine compartment, the customer should safely park and shut off the engine as promptly as possible.
Do customers need to park outdoors?
No. Reported incidents for this recall indicate any underhood fires would occur when the vehicle is being driven.
When will you notify customers?
Customers received initial notification in June 2023.
Will there be a charge to customers?
