What are the flash drive requirements when performing a SYNC®* update?
To update your SYNC 3 or SYNC with MyFord Touch system using a flash drive, also known as a USB or thumb drive, verify that your flash drive meets the requirements below.
Note: SYNC 4 and SYNC 4A can only be updated via a Ford Power-Up software update or at a Concesionario Ford.
Identifying Your Vehicle's SYNC Generation
Use these two resources to help you identify your vehicle's SYNC generation:
- SYNC and Navigation Updates page allows you to enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or log in with your Ford credentials, and select Check for update. Your current SYNC generation will appear on the right-hand side of the page.

Flash Drive Specifications
Choose your SYNC version from the drop-down options below:
SYNC 3
To update SYNC 3, the USB must be:
- Either USB Version 2.0 or 3.0.
- 16GB or 64GB.
- Formatted to ExFAT.
- Without a password.
- Completely empty.
Note: If your vehicle is equipped with SYNC 3 with Navigation, you can enable automatic updates via Wi-Fi.
SYNC con MyFord Touch®
To update SYNC with MyFord Touch, the USB must be:
- Version 2.0.
- 4GB to 32GB.
- Formatted to FAT32.
- Without a password.
- Completely empty.
Previous SYNC Versions
Note: Previous versions include SYNC Gen 1, Gen 1.1, SYNC with MyFord, SYNC with Voice-activated Navigation, and SYNC with "P" Navigation.
Updating with a USB is not possible for these SYNC versions. Visit your dealer for an update.
