Can I drive my Ford while it is updating?
Some updates can be completed while your vehicle is being driven while others require your vehicle to be off. Select your SYNC version below to learn more.
Identifying Your Ford's SYNC Generation
Use the following resources to help identify your SYNC generation:
- El SYNC and Navigation Updates page allows you to enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or log in with your Ford credentials and select Check for update. Your current SYNC generation will appear on the right-hand side of the page.
- El SYNC Visual Reference Guide has example images of each generation of SYNC.
Updating Your Vehicle
Select your SYNC generation from the drop-down options below:
Software updates - SYNC®*4A/SYNC 4
- Some updates will happen seamlessly in the background while you are driving.
- Non-drivable updates require your vehicle to be turned off while updating. Most complete within minutes, while others may take longer**. You should schedule the update to occur when you do not need to drive your vehicle, such as overnight.
SYNC updates - SYNC 3 and previous versions of SYNC
Wi-Fi (SYNC 3 required)
You can drive and use SYNC during the update.
Flash drive (SYNC 3 and previous versions of SYNC)
Your vehicle must be in park when you initiate the SYNC update installation process. Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area as your vehicle must remain running until the update is complete. Once the download process starts, you may drive your vehicle.
*Don’t drive while distracted. Usa sistemas operados por voz cuando sea posible; no uses dispositivos portátiles mientras conduces. Es posible que algunas características estén desactivadas cuando el vehículo está en marcha. No todas las características son compatibles con todos los teléfonos.
**Always check your in-vehicle screen or FordPass app for the most accurate estimated update time.
