2023—2024 Ford Transit® Vehicles — Potential 9.75” Rear Axle Tail Bearing Seizure Recall

Electronic key fob for a Ford vehicle

Recall Reference Number: 24S05

Building vehicles you can count on is one of our most important jobs, which is why Ford has issued a recall on certain 2023–24 model year Ford Transit vehicles.

Some vehicles don't coat the rear axle tail bearing with enough lubricant to prevent rear axle overheating or failure. If this happens, rear wheel lock-up and possible driveshaft separation may cause loss of vehicle control or vehicle power, increasing the risk of crash or injury. Driveshaft separation may also cause the vehicle to move while in Park if the parking brake is not applied.

Customers included in this recall should take their Ford Transit vehicle to a Ford Dealership to have the rear axle inspected. It will be worked on or replaced, if needed. To see if your vehicle is included, enter your VIN here.

You can book an appointment online, in your FordPass® App, or contact your local Concesionario Ford.

Preguntas Frecuentes

What is the issue tied to this recall?

Some 2023-2024 Ford Transit vehicles are experiencing rear axle bearing failures. If this happens, rear wheel lock-up and possible driveshaft separation may cause loss of vehicle control or vehicle power. Driveshaft separation may also cause the vehicle to move while in Park if the parking brake is not applied.

What is the cause of the issue?

Certain 2023-2024 vehicles don’t have enough lubricant to properly coat the axle tail bearing, which may cause it to overheat and stop working.

¿Cuál es la reparación que se espera?

Dealers will inspect the rear axle. If symptoms are consistent with future failure, the full axle assembly will be replaced. If there are metal shavings on the axle fill plug magnet, the fluid will be washed, and the axle bearings will be replaced. If there are no metal shavings, dealers will add additional axle lubricant to the rear differential.

Which vehicles are affected?

Certain 2023 Transit vehicles built between May 17, 2023, to November 30, 2023, and certain 2024 Transit vehicles built between August 28, 2023, to November 30, 2023.

Is there a warning or alert for customers?

Customers may see rear axle fluid leaks when the vehicle is parked and may experience grinding noise and vibration from the rear axle while driving.

What should affected customers do until their vehicle can be inspected?

Out of an abundance of caution, customers are encouraged to apply the parking brake when they park their vehicle.

When will parts be available?

We are working to determine parts availability timing for vehicles that require bearing or axle replacement. For vehicles that require bearing replacement, an interim repair can be performed.

When will you notify customers?

We will begin notifying customers March 4, 2024.

Will there be a charge to customers?

Customers will not be charged for this service.

What is the Ford reference number for this recall?

The reference number is 24S05.
