2019—2020 Ford Fusion® Energi Plug-in Hybrid — Battery and Power Loss Recall

Recall Reference Number: 23S33
Building vehicles you can count on is one of our most important jobs, which is why Ford has issued a safety recall for certain 2019-2020 Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid models. The Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) may become damaged due to excess voltage and current flow. This may result in a loss of motive power which increases the risk of a crash, or a vehicle fire in the trunk area, which increases the risk of injury.
You can find out if your vehicle is included in this recall by entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) aquí.
The repair remedy for this issue is replacement of the high voltage battery and BECM. You can book your appointment to have this repair completed in the FordPass® App, en línea, or by calling an authorized Ford/Lincoln dealership. If you previously had an interim repair completed, this repair will restore plug-in charging functionality.
As an interim repair, you can now book an appointment to temporarily disable plug-in charging until parts are available for the final repair remedy. The interim repair will remove the possibility of an internal high voltage battery failure. You can book an appointment online with participating dealers in your FordPass® App or by contacting your local Concesionario Ford.
Ford is also offering an alternative remedy option for vehicles affected by this recall. Ford is offering customers a statutory refund of the vehicle's purchase price, less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. The "refund amount" is based on fair market value of the vehicle, plus a 15% premium. "Fair market value" is based on the original Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), less depreciation as determined using regional market data, and does not include the cost of any modifications made to the vehicle after the first retail sale. This alternative remedy will be offered until July 1, 2025.
For details on the statutory refund option and to view an estimated refund amount for your vehicle, access the Vehicle Refund Estimator using the link below. You can also contact the Ford Customer Relationship Center (CRC) at 1-833-807-3673 to lock in your official statutory refund amount and to proceed with the refund process. When calling, please reference recall number 23S33 and have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and current vehicle mileage ready.
If you choose the statutory refund option, you must contact the CRC prior to July 1, 2025 to accept the offer. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
As always, thank you for being a Ford Owner.
Preguntas Frecuentes
What is the issue tied to this recall?
Certain vehicles may not start or will display a "Stop Safely Now" message while driving, followed by a loss of power within a few seconds. There is also a risk of a vehicle fire breaking out in the trunk area while driving. A loss of power or a vehicle fire while driving can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
What is the cause of the issue?
The current interrupt device (CID) can create excess voltage and current flow, damaging the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).
What should customers do in the meantime?
Customers should not charge their vehicles until the repair is completed. Lowering the battery's state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the battery control module in the trunk.
Is Ford offering a vehicle refund option?
As an alternative remedy option for vehicles affected by this recall, Ford is offering customers a statutory refund of the vehicle's purchase price, less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. Why weren’t customers instructed to park outside?
We don’t have any evidence that shows unattended vehicles are at risk.
Can customers still drive their vehicles?
Ford is not instructing customers to stop driving their vehicles. Until the repair is completed, lowering the battery's state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the vehicle's battery energy control module, which is located in the trunk.
Is Ford aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition?
As of May 2024, Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition.
Is Ford aware of any fires related to this condition?
Yes. As of May 2024, seven fires have occurred in total. Two occurred while customers were driving the vehicle and five occurred while being serviced at the dealership.
Are there any warranty issues related to this concern?
As of early May, Ford has received 270 warranty claims resulting in a loss of vehicle power due to this concern.
When will dealers be notified about the safety recall and the recommended fix?

Will there be a charge to customers?
