Recall Reference Number: 23S33

The safety of you and your passengers is key to every vehicle we build. That is why we've issued a recall for certain 2019-2020 Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid models.

 

  • There is a chance a fire may break out in the trunk area while driving, increasing the risk of injury. We are asking you to please avoid charging your vehicle until a remedy is available.
  • Some Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid models may not start or may display a "Stop Safely Now" message while driving, followed by a loss of power within a few seconds.

Which vehicles are included in this recall?

2019-2020 Model Year Ford Fusion® Energi sedans with 30Ah plug-in hybrid electric vehicle cell batteries built between December 6, 2017, and July 27, 2020.

What is the issue tied to this recall?

Certain vehicles may not start or will display a "Stop Safely Now" message while driving, followed by a loss of power within a few seconds. There is also a risk of a vehicle fire breaking out in the trunk area while driving. Both increase the risk of injury.

What is the cause of the issue?

The current interrupt device (CID) is creating excess voltage and current flow, damaging the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).

What should customers do in the meantime?

Customers should not charge their vehicles until the remedy is available. Lowering the battery's state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the battery control module in the trunk.

When will the repair be ready?

We are working hard to find a solution as soon as possible.

Why weren’t customers instructed to park outside?

We don’t have any evidence that shows unattended vehicles are at risk.

Can customers still drive their vehicles?

Ford is not instructing customers to stop driving their vehicles. Until the remedy is available, lowering the battery's state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the vehicle's battery control module, which is located in the trunk.

Since customers won’t have access to the charging capabilities of their vehicle, what will you do to make up for that?

We will soon be sending more information to customers concerning the compensation about providing for lost fuel savings. These vehicles normally receive around 26 miles per charge.

Are there any open investigations on this specific issue?

No.

Is Ford aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition?

No.

Is Ford aware of any fires related to this condition?

Yes. Seven fires have occurred in total. Two occurred while customers were driving the vehicle and five occurred while being serviced at the dealership.

Are there any warranty issues related to this concern?

As of early May, Ford has received 270 warranty claims resulting in a loss of vehicle power due to this concern.

When will dealers be notified about the safety recall and the recommended fix?

Dealers were notified on June 27, 2023.

When will you notify customers?

We will begin notifying customers by mail soon.

Will there be a charge to customers?

No.
