How do I maintain my Ford electric vehicle battery?

Based on your vehicle's battery type, you should adjust the maximum charge level to maintain range accuracy and minimize battery degradation.

Confirming Your Battery Type

Mustang Mach-E Batteries

  • Standard Range: Locate the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the driver-side door or dashboard near the windshield on an aluminum tab. It will have 17 characters. If the 8th digit is a 4 or 5, it is a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery. If there is any other digit or letter, it is a Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) battery.
  • Extended Range: Extended range vehicles have an NCM battery.

F-150 Lightning Batteries

2023 Model Year F-150 Lightning standard and extended-range batteries are NCM.

Charging at Home (Level 1 & 2 AC Charging)

  • Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries: Set the maximum charge level to 100%. Charge to 100% at least once per month to maintain estimated in-vehicle range accuracy (both state of charge and distance to empty). If not charged to 100% at least once per month, owners may experience degraded vehicle performance and a decrease in the accuracy of the vehicle's estimated range.
  • Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) batteries: Set the maximum charge level to 90% to reduce strain on the battery. Setting the maximum charge level to 100% provides full range for long trips.

DC Fast Charging On-the-Road

Charging your LFP or NCM battery to 80% minimizes your time charging and reduces battery capacity degradation (since charging rates will slow between 80-100%).
